Clean every surface before wrapping

Dust, crumbs and moisture can cause more damage over time than the storage environment itself. Vacuum upholstery, wipe timber with the correct product and allow every piece to dry completely before it is covered.

Photograph furniture before dismantling it. Record joints, cable routes and any existing marks. Put fixings in a labelled bag and attach the bag securely to the relevant item rather than placing every screw in one shared box.

Choose breathable protection

Use moving blankets or cotton covers for timber and upholstered pieces. Plastic can be useful during transport, but tightly sealed plastic left for a long period may trap condensation. Protect glass with rigid card and corner guards, then store it upright in a clearly marked position.

Remove shelves and drawers where practical. This reduces weight during handling and stops loose parts moving inside the frame. Avoid adhesive tape directly on wood, leather or fabric because residues can discolour or lift the finish.

Leave a safe route through the unit

Place the heaviest, least-used pieces at the back and keep frequently needed items near the front. Leave a narrow central path, do not stack weight on sofas, and allow a little air to circulate around walls. A simple sketch of the final layout will save time whenever you return.
