Moving everything on one day sounds efficient, but it often turns a manageable move into a crowded race against the clock. A short period of storage lets you separate preparation, moving day and settling in, so each stage has a clear purpose.

Begin with the rooms you can live without
Start two to four weeks before the move with spare-room furniture, books, artwork and seasonal belongings. Removing these first gives you space to sort what remains and makes it easier to see which boxes genuinely need to travel with you on moving day.
Keep a simple inventory as you go. Number each box, note the room it belongs to and mark whether it is needed immediately, within the first month or only seasonally. That small habit is more useful than writing vague labels such as miscellaneous.
Create a first-night group
Do not send everything into storage. Keep bedding, towels, chargers, medication, a basic toolkit, kettle supplies and one change of clothes together. These are the items that turn an empty new property into somewhere you can function from the first evening.
If completion dates overlap or change, store large furniture before the final day. With fewer heavy items in the old home, cleaners and movers can work more safely and the new rooms stay clear while you decide where pieces should live.
Move back in by priority, not by box number
Once the essential rooms are working, bring back one category at a time. A week between groups is often enough to notice what the new home actually needs. Anything left untouched for several months deserves a second decision: keep it, donate it or give it a more permanent home.
