THE SHORT VERSION
The right unit is large enough to move around safely, but not so large that you pay for a corridor of empty floor. Start with an honest list of what is leaving your home or workplace, then group the items by type: boxes, freestanding furniture, appliances, shelving and anything awkward or fragile.
PRACTICAL GUIDANCE
A 25 sq ft unit can hold dozens of boxes, sports equipment or the contents of a compact room. Around 50 sq ft usually suits a one-bedroom flat when furniture can be stacked carefully. A 75 to 100 sq ft unit gives a typical two-bedroom move more breathing room, while 150 sq ft and above is better for a larger home, bulky workshop equipment or business inventory. Measure the longest pieces first, especially sofas, wardrobes and tables. Leave a narrow route to anything you may need before move-out, and keep frequently used boxes near the door.
